Dist:0.3km<br/>This pasture to the east of Branston dips down sharply to the marshy course of a fast flowing stream before rising steeply on the other side. According to the map the bridleway climbs up at an almost impossible angle on its way to the top.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Having missed the route of the bridleway I ended up using this little bridge to cross the fast flowing stream at the bottom of the steep hill. It is one of several put in place for cattle to cross the water.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This is a view of the higher part of the field in [[998177]]. The edge of the fallow area can just be made out at the far centre point. Knipton Reservoir is between this high ground and Reservoir Wood in the distance., both in [[SK8130]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>The reed bed has been mown to allow livestock easy access to water from the stream and, one assumes, Knipton Reservoir which is just beyond the trees in the distance.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The more or less parallel lines of the hedges here make a striking pattern. The field boundaries almost certainly date back no further than the Parliamentary Enclosure Acts of about 200 years ago. In economic terms, the enclosure of what had been parish fields and commons was a form of privatisation which left many peasant farmers dispossessed. It also swept away a form of landscape which had persisted since medieval times. John Clare, the so-called 'peasant-poet', lived some 25 miles away, beyond Stamford. The enclosure movement of the early 1800's destroyed the landscape of his childhood, and left him broken-hearted. He loved walking along hedges, looking for birds' nests and the like. If he came back, I feel he would prefer these pastures to much of modern England - even if the slashed hawthorn hedges are far from ideal for wildlife.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This view from the high ground to the east of the pasture clearly shows the marsh bottom of the field. The bridge in [[998159]] and [[998873]] can be seen lower centre but the stream which flows left to right towards Knipton Reservoir is completely hidden by the reeds and rushes. The cleared line to the right of the bridge is a mown "path" through the reeds for livestock just this side of the stream, see [[998864]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>Once the village school room. When it was closed the children went to school in Eaton. When Eaton school closed in the mid 1980s they had to go to Waltham on the Wolds. The old school bell is still in the tower above the door.

Dist:0.5km<br/>There are several groups of cottages built on "spurs" off Main Street but still with a Main Street address. These two are on the farm track to Hall Farm, (off to the right), which is also the bridleway to Croxton Lodge on Knipton Road.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The disused village school was built in 1843, and still retains its bell in the tower. Like several properties in this attractive village, its redevelopment is in a state of suspension.

Dist:0.5km<br/>At the top of the hill above the reservoir the farmland flattens out into a large plateau. This field has been lying fallow this year. Knipton Reservoir, seen in the distance, is managed by the Belvoir Castle Estate and lies in [[SK8130]]. It is not accessible to the public.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The woodland to the left borders the reservoir, an elusive body of water owned and managed by the Belvoir Castle Estate which has no public access.
