Bradmore Homepage


This name won't be found on any current map, but was the traditional name of this part of what is now Farmer Street, according to the information board visible under the tree to the right. The origin of the name remains an enigma. Suggestions that it was a corruption of 'rampart' have been discounted as there is no evidence either on maps or on the ground of any fortifications in the immediate area. The earliest written record dates from 1818 and relates to the granting of grazing rights on the verges. Today the verges are mown at times chosen to encourage the growth of traditional wild flowers.

There is no evidence at all on older maps that I can find of any mill along this lane, which is unrelated to the known site of a windmill in the village. The track has bridleway status, although only a yellow (footpath) waymark appears on the signpost.

Looking towards the Turnpike, the main A608 to from Nottingham to Loughborough. This road into Bradmore was once called The Ramper, a name of uncertain origin. Ramper (or Rampart) is of uncertain origin as there is no evidence of any incline or earthworks nearby. Although this name is not recorded on any Ordnance Survey map, it is frequently used in old written records, the first instance in 1818 when Mr Goodachre of Blackcliffe Farm rented the verges for grazing cattle. There is an information board at the start of the street (under the tree on the right) describing the history of the street.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The square tower of the Church was built in the thirteenth century and an octagonal spire added in the fourteenth century. Building was halted until the Black Death had abated. The church then suffered badly in the fire and remained unused for a considerable time. A small hall was erected next to the tower in 1881, where services are now held once a month.

Bradmore is a small village comprising a 8.2 hectare Conservation Area which includes 19 Listed Buildings or structures (all Grade II). The core of the village has changed little over the last 300 years. A devastating fire in 1705 destroyed 12 houses and numerous barns, stables and workshops in under two hours, the damage estimated at £6000. The village was reconstructed largely by Sir Thomas Parkyns (1662-1741) of Bunny Hall, who designed and built many of the red brick cottages barns and farmhouses in existence today. The 13th/14th century tower and spire of the church survived the fire but was never properly rebuilt and by 1881 a Mission Hall had been built adjoining the original tower. By the beginning of the 20th century this brick building was used as a barn. This now forms part of the church and Holy Communion is celebrated once a month at an altar which is situated at the bottom of the tower. The church has never been dedicated to a saint, and was originally built as a chapel of ease within the main parish of the church at Bunny, see [[[4252]]].
