Dist:0.5km<br/>Bromsgrove and the surrounding villages, including Bournheath, were once important centres of the nailmaking industry. It flourished from the 17th to the late 19th centuries, but then declined rapidly as it was not able to compete with mechanisation brought about by the industrial revolution. By the middle of the 20th century, at the latest, it had disappeared. The name of this pub reflects the past link between the village and the industry. Today Bournheath is home to many people who commute to work in towns such as Bromsgrove and Birmingham, as well as the home of retired people. [[2833270]].

Dist:0.5km<br/>Originally the pub was known as The Gate Hangs Well. The name is common in the Midlands, and sometimes found as The Hanging Gate and The Gate Hangs High. It is thought to be connected to a pub's proximity to a church gate, toll gate or town gate, so perhaps there was a toll gate around here in the past. The sign in rural areas is sometimes a miniature five barred gate, as in this case. On some signs there is also a verse, usually "The gate hangs well, and hinders none. Refresh and pay, and travel on". Originally the none was non and presumably the old pronunciation meant it rhymed with on. However, in the case of this pub, the verse was different, and ran: "The gate hangs well, To no man's sorrow, Pay today, And trust tomorrow". This verse could be seen on the sign at one time, but that disappeared twenty five years or more ago. It is rather a pity when pub owners change historic names, but it happens a lot. [[2847140]].

Dist:0.7km<br/>There is a small car park here from which a public bridleway commences, and this goes through the wood before coming out on a lane which leads to the village of Fairfield. The wood itself has been designated as public access land, so walkers are free to walk the many paths here.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Fairfield War Memorial Cross was unveiled by General Sir Percy Radcliffe and dedicated by Rev. Canon Cronshaw on Sunday 4th May 1924. As well as the names of the fallen from both World Wars, another inscription reads:- "To the Glory of God and in Memory of the Men of Fairfield who gave their lives for God, King and Country in the Great War 1914-1919 Lest We Forget". Like many memorials of this time, the ending date is given as 1919 rather than 1918. The memorial is located outside the village hall. According to the United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials, the memorial was designed by the Bromsgrove Guild, who were well-known in the arts & craft world. They existed from 1898 to 1966. There is a modern organisation using the same name. [[2832499]].
