Although the Dane parallels the canal for much of the way between Middlewich and Northwich its valley is often well wooded and the towpath walker or canal cruiser will only get glimpses of the river down below the canal in the 'Amazon jungle'. Unfortunately there is no public access to the river valley.

The location of this shaft gives some idea of the extent of the underground workings of the Winsford salt mine. The main shaft and mine workings are over 1 km away to the SW. In fact the underground mine workings are far more extensive even than this.
