After about 100 years of production, the ironworks was closed in 1968 - photos of how it used to look can be seen here http://www.banklands.com/millom.htm . After demolition the site became a haven for wildlife, and was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 2002.

Dist:0.5km<br/>At Millom Ironworks Nature Reserve, which is part of the Duddon Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest. Nationally rare natterjack toads live on the reserve. There were plenty of tadpoles in this pond [[2187874]] but we could not say which species they belong to.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Millom was formerly an active port, but the dangerous channels meant a pilot service was required. These days there is little activity on the water. The nearby iron works and all the rail services closed down in the 1960s.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The cyclists are on the Cumbria Coastal Way, which in this section follows the track of a dismantled mineral railway. They are passing a waste tip left behind after closure of the Millom Ironworks. In the middle distance is Salthouse Farm, with Black Combe behind that.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Millom Ironworks closed in the 1960s, but we don't know whether the surface of this massive slag heap has been levelled since then. There is hardly any plant growth, except round the edges. The site is now a place for recreation and wildlife conservation [[2187831]] .

Dist:0.7km<br/>The sides of this heap are covered with grass and bushes, so it was a big surprise to see the bare white surface. It is waste from the blast furnaces of Millom Ironworks, which closed in 1968. The cleared site is now a nature reserve http://www.english-nature.org.uk/Special/lnr/lnr_details.asp?C=9&N=&ID=1389 .
