Dist:0.6km<br/>The upper reaches of Howden Burn, (a tributary of the Bollihope Burn), have seen extensive mining for lead. The foreground shows what is possibly the banking of a water cut and to the right there's a wide, flat area created from mine waste. Distantly can be seen more of the very extensive mine spoils which are so large that the flow of the Hawkwood Burn has had to be culverted through them.

Dist:1.0km<br/>The presence of five pikes on this fairly featureless moorland above Weardale is far from obvious. The trig pillar is one of many established for the Ordnance Survey Retriangulation of Great Britain. Subsequently, Global Positioning Systems have rendered the pillars redundant, but they remain valuable landmarks and aids to navigation. They have now been adopted and are maintained by individuals on a voluntary basis.

Dist:1.0km southeast<br/>Five Pikes is a hill of modest height on the south side of Bollihope, a tributary valley of the R. Wear; the name is odd - one cannot discern a single pike, never mind five of them! The surrounding ground about the trig beneath the snow cover is heather moor.

Dist:1.0km southwest<br/>The reservoir seen here is one of a pair, now disused, that supplied water for power production at lead mining sites below in the valley of the Howden Burn. The heathery ridge in the distance is the hill, Five Pikes.
