Dist:0.3km<br/>A rural scene, looking towards the Black Mountain in the distance. It's hard to believe, but until 1951 a mineral railway ran through this scene to the left of the picture, part of the Mountain Branch of the Central Wales Line that ran from Pantyffynon to Cross Hands, linking numerous collieries. Almost all of these have now closed.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The access to two public rights of way has been blocked by this fence. It looks temporary and there was quite a bit of evidence of heavy vehicles having recently accessed the site so some nearby building work may have necessitated the temporary closure of the paths.

Dist:0.8km<br/>View towards Ammanford with mud, rushes and sheep. The ground on which I am standing is raised about 5 metres above surrounding land by the deposit and levelling of rubble and soil from elsewhere.

Dist:1.0km northwest<br/>This track, now a public footpath, seems to be part of the industrial history of the area, but it's not apparent what purpose it served.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>A footbridge over the river Marlais on former open cast ground. A look at the 1940 map confirms that everything has changed in this area. The roads have been moved and this river now has suspiciously straight portions and sweeping curves to divert it around a large flat area of fields.

Dist:1.1km east<br/>This road runs through the countryside north east of Ammanford. It's now blocked off so that no traffic can now use it and is now looking decidedly derelict. It was once used by trucks to access nearby opencast workings to avoid public roads.

Dist:1.1km east<br/>Shands Road provided a private road for mineral traffic to nearby open cast workings in the 1960s. Previous to this, the Mountain Branch of the Central Wales Line ran along this route and there was a level crossing. Today, it's closed and has remained unused for many years. Leaves cover the tarmac and a fallen tree obscures part of the road.

Dist:1.1km northeast<br/>The modern map shows a right of way here to get back on the main road - and there is, but it requires you to descend to the river below and wade across. There has been fly tipping in the mouth of the junction on the far side and this blocks the stile. Luckily the fence is broken so it doesn't matter so much. The surface has presumably been removed from the bridge to dissuade the more high-volume fly tippers from trying to get to the secluded land beyond.
