This picture was taken from TQ392811 which was where I was working at the time. The Financial Times building now occupies the power station site (more or less). This area has changed almost beyond recognition over the past 20 years

The new tunnel provides a two lane roadway heading south. The original Victorian tunnel runs to the west of this one.

This Monument was first unveiled in 1928 by America's Ambassador dedicated to the 'First Settlers' who had sailed forth from the meandering reaches of the Thames at Blackwall on a murky December's day in 1606 in three small Merchant ships. King James 1 had commanded them to bring him treasure and gold from the 'New World', the venture being financed by 'The Virginia Company of London'.

This stands on the Thames, by the Millennium Dome, and is on the Thames Barrier - Waterloo cycle path (hence the tire tracks on the post).

The elevated nature of the DLR, so typical of this area, is shown with this view of East India station. A westbound train is just arriving. The road is Blackwall Way, and the distant high building is the HSBC tower at Canary Wharf.

This shows high rise apartments being built close to the river Thames in Blackwall , east London. On the pavement the prime meridian is marked with a checkerboard of small tiles and a brass strip. A blue line of tiles has also been put on the low rise white building in the middle distance to mark the meridian. This view is due north along the meridian.

The covered walkway connecting the Jubilee Line underground station with the former Dome, now the O2 Arena.

Advertising hoardings, promoting the O2 arena as a concert venue, along side the walkway from the tube station to the entrance to the O2 Arena represent pop fans from each of the decades since the 1950s. The three in the picture are of the 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s.

The ventilation shafts serve the newer southbound bore of the tunnel which was opened in 1967. They were designed by the architect Terry Farrell and were Grade II listed in 2000. The Ontario Tower is on the New Providence Wharf development and was completed in 2007. It has 260 residential flats and 169 hotel rooms arranged over 32 floors and is about 104 metres high. This view was taken from Blackwall Way.

The line down the middle of the avenue represents the Greenwich Meridian, and carries on up the building in the distance. Incidentally don't take your GPS receiver to this line and expect it to read 0˚ 00' 00".00000 W longitude! This is because the GPS system uses World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) longitudes which are defined, simply, in terms of the geometric centre of the Earth, whereas the Greenwich Meridian is defined in terms of the gravitational centre of the Earth, which is slightly different. 0˚ 00' 00".00000 W longitude on your GPS should appear about 100 metres east of this location, near the Virginia Quay memorial, whereas you should read about 0˚ 00' 05".7 W longitude here on this line. As an aside (!) this is the Barratt-built Virginia Quay housing development.
