Dist:0.8km west<br/>Opened in the 18th century and at one time used for victualling troops on their way to Dover to embark for the Battle of Waterloo, this fine old pub sadly closed three years ago, and is now 'tinned up' and awaiting redevelopment, which will almost inevitably mean demolition.

Dist:0.8km west<br/>The Old Tiger’s Head pub, left of picture is opposite the now boarded-up New Tiger’s Head, right. A notice in the doorway of the boarded up pub notes a bit of history: “This public house was built in the 18th century to service travellers moving from the Kent coast to central London via Blackheath. The house was frequently the centre of a frozen lake during the early 1800s when the Quaggy River regularly broke its banks and froze over from January to June. Its busiest time was just prior to the Battle of Waterloo when for three weeks troops moved continuously from London to Dover via Lee Green. The New Tiger’s Head is one of many public houses with the word "Tiger" in its title — so named to glory in the sport of tiger hunting in the days of the Indian raj.” Today, the Quaggy Rivers seems hardly capable of such inconvenience – see [[865318]].

Dist:0.9km west<br/>by the mini-roundabout at the junction of Blackheath Village, Lee Road, Lee Park and Lee Terrace. Not quite as famous as the Paris Conservatoire, Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts http://www.blackheath.org/bcma.htm was founded in 1881 and this building was opened in 1896. This image completes hectad [[TQ37]].

Dist:0.9km west<br/>This pub. remains open on the north-west angle of the crossroads, whilst its rival the 'New Tiger' just on the north-east angle of the same crossroads, closed three years ago. Just opposite this pub, was one of the last 'change pits' on the London Tramways, where the trams changed over from conduit electrical supply to overhead trolley. As a tram approached from London, the 'plough' would shoot out from underneath on its own separate rail, the trolley boom would be raised and off would go the tram again towards Eltham or Abbey Wood. The reverse operation involved an attendant on site who would 'fork' the plough into position for the onward journey into London. All this lasted until 1952 and was one of the last places where the procedure could be seen. I only wish I had photographed it then, when I had the chance!

Dist:0.9km west<br/>Seeing the Quaggy River trickle its way past Lee Green today, it is hard to imagine the scenes of flooding described here: [[491150]]. A fox may just be discerned on the right-hand bank as it disappears around the bend.

Dist:0.9km southwest<br/>It is hard to tell whether these are all closed shops, or just do not trade on Sundays. Certainly a quarter of them are without signboards but there is a Woolworth's, an Iceland, a pharmacist, a butcher and a charity shop.
