Part of the Blackhall Rocks Nature Reserve and valued because of its sheltered position and home to eight species of orchids. On the north bank the Durham Wildlife Trust are clearing the gorse and other invasive scrubs away.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The main shaft was sunk in 1909 and the first coal produced in 1913. The geological conditions were difficult with water saturated strata and flooding. Blackhall became the final phase of the Durham Coalfield reaching out under the sea for approximately 3 miles and it was one of the most advanced collieries of the region. colliery from 1978 onwards. In 1981, Blackhall ceased production, 732 men were transferred to other collieries and 586 accepted redundancy. The colliery was finally closed and demolished in 1986. Much of the land was landscaped and converted into a business park. The topsoil is thin here on the layers of compacted waste and the planted trees have taken some time to become established. Dist:0.4km<br/>The diagonal concrete channel running down the cliff is close to the site of 'Aerial Flight', a cable-operated bucket conveyor system that transferred mine waste from Blackhall Colliery to a dump just offshore http://www.dmm-gallery.org.uk/gallery/b006-012.htm The old photograph shows the cable-way in operation in 1929 but it only appears briefly on the large scale OS maps in the 1950s, and only the tower bases depicted in the following 1960s edition. However, it was clearly still operating in the summer of 1970, as it featured in the closing violent scenes of the iconic north-east film, 'Get Carter', starring Michael Caine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Carter There is another photograph of the site today here [[1610048]] A similar cableway operated from Easington Colliery [[1581907]]
