Dist:0.1km<br/>Unlike the familiar triangulation points which have now largely been abandoned, the fundamental benchmarks are still in use by the Ordnance Survey as passive GPS stations (as mentioned by the modern plaques placed on these monuments by the OS). Indeed, a man from the O.S. was seen only a day or so previously with a GPSr on a tripod measuring this location.

Dist:0.2km<br/>One of the more important locators today - unlike most triangulation pillars, this is still of importance to the Ordnance Survey as a passive GPS station. Underneath this small pillar, not far from bedrock is a concrete "coffin" containing both a metal stud and flint marker which have had their locations measured incredibly accurately in the past. These days, just the marker on the surface of the small pillar is now measured as part of the modern GPS survey.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Pam the penguin shows us what to expect to see when looking for a Fundamental Benchmark. On two sides of the pillar are plaques presented by the Ordnance Survey stating that this is indeed still important to modern surveying. In Wales one plaque is in Welsh and the other is in English - expect just English in England. The centre of the rosette on the top of the small concrete structure has been levelled with a height of 70.7086 metres - just under Pam's left foot! Many of these structures, that look like miniature trig points are surrounded by "play pens" - metallic fences to protect the structure from damage, which shows how important these were and still are to modern surveying. These fundamental bench marks also go down all the way to bedrock, however far that requires. This one was protected from immediate damage I guess by the fact that it was on top of a grassy knoll. And guarded by a penguin ;)

Dist:0.3km<br/>Bishopston Stream has disappeared down sink holes and reappeared in various different places at different times. Despite it not appearing on current maps it is now present above ground, here next to Church Lane. At the corner of Church Lane and Old Kittle Road if crosses the tarmac forming a shallow ford. This not entirely adjacent footbridge has been built to allow dry passage around the ford.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The Bishopston stream fords Church Lane / Old Kittle Road just a few yards upstream from here, visible in the background. After just a short run it disappears down a small sink hole and isn't seen again for another kilometre. The riverbed immediately downstream from here is dry but devoid of mulch or vegetation, hinting that this small sink hole lacks the capacity to devour the stream during greater flows.
