Dist:0.2km<br/>The tree sits on the grassy hill above Birling Gap. It is shaped this way, low and leaning, due to the prevailing wind coming from the west, off the English Channel. The chalky South Downs meet the sea here at Birling Gap. On the skyline is Belle Tout Lighthouse, now a home, which has recently literally been rolled back from the vertical cliff-face which is being continually undercut by the sea. The hill containing the former lighthouse is half-circled by earthen ramparts. The southern half of the hill-fort has fallen into the sea over the millennia!

Dist:0.4km<br/>What is now a small hamlet could have been very different if Carew Gilbert, Lord of the Manor of Birling, had had his way. Between the 1880s and the 1930s he attempted a number of schemes to build a new cliff top resort at this location and along the Seven Sisters which only failed to get off the ground due to the railway companies refusal to build a line to the new resort and the concerted effort of local conservation groups and the National Trust during the 1920s. As it is only a few houses to the west of the hotel were built in the 1920s.
