Dist:0.2km<br/>Much of this square is a landfill tip. It's grassed over and used for agriculture now, but the methane produced in the tip is being burned off here. Carbon dioxide is produced, but although notorious, is a far weaker greenhouse agent than methane. More urgently, unlike methane, Carbon dioxide is not explosive. Houses have been built on landfill sites and then later destroyed by a methane build-up exploding. Look for the blurred skyline due to the refraction in the hot gas plume above the burner.

Dist:0.7km<br/>This gravestone in Lasswade Old Kirkyard is apparently unique in Scotland, and shows two men surveying. One holds the plumb line, the other has the level on his shoulder and between them an early clinometer. The stone was erected in 1767 by John Ross, overseer of Melville coalworks in memory of his wife Marion McKenzie.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The first recorded church on this site was dedicated in 1240, and the churchyard is the burial place of many worthy citizens. Subsequently an Adam church was built on the site in 1793, demolished in 1959.
