Dist:0.1km<br/>"Description in 1868: BIDDESTONE, (or Bidstone), a parish, township, and village in the hundred of Chippenham, in the county of Wilts, 4 miles to the W. of Chippenham, its post town, and 18 from Bristol. It formerly constituted two parishes, St. Nicholas and St. Peter, but they are now united for ecclesiastical purposes. The brook called the Wavering flows through the village. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value with the curacy of Slaughterford, £102, in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of Winchester College. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is an ancient structure, and was thoroughly repaired in 1850. It has a monument to Edmund Smith, a poet of some note at the beginning of the 18th century, who died at Hartham House, in this parish. The church of St. Peter has been taken down. There is a chapel belonging to the Baptists, and a National school. The charities amount to £23 per annum. Lord Methuen is lord of the manor." Dist:0.2km<br/>Because the Victorians were fond of ornament, by the 19th century, these silhouette weathervanes began to take on a wider range of subjects, from exotic animals, mythical creatures, sporting motifs, and even trade signs. Wrought iron finally gave way to the easily mass-produced cast iron vane. Unfortunately, this meant not only that the copper weathervane maker was becoming obsolete, but also that the unique character of the hand-made weathervane was being discarded for reasons of cost efficiency and repeatability.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The pond is in the centre of the village and is flanked by flag iris and seating. Unlike nearby Castle Coombe or Lacock, this pretty village is not overrun by tourists and is still a place to relax and unwind.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This pond is more significant than at first sight. Local records show that in 1661 a Mr Mountjoy made a gutter from the springs and put the water from the streets into a pond. The pond provided water for animals and steam engines. In it, wagon wheels were soaked during warm weather to expand their wood, thus preventing their iron tyres from getting loose.
