Dist:0.1km north<br/>A Roller for six grand no thanks! There are many railway arches in the area filled with small businesses, many to do with the motor trade. This sales lot was a bit more upmarket! However there is still a bit of green in Bethnal Green not much more than 50 yards from here I saw grey squirrels!

Dist:0.1km north<br/>This large church left no clue as to its previous owners or name, but both it and the adjoining vicarage have been converted into flats, a far superior alternative than demolition, as it is a splendid building. Apparently the former prime minister, Clement Attlee, who did much social work in this area as a younger man, was at one time associated with the church, which apparently was also known as 'The Red Church'. This is thought to refer to the colour of its brickwork rather than to the political affiliation of its congregation.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>On Bethnal Green Road at the junction with Ruchmond Street. The previous name is not to be descried, but according to paper stickers it last traded as 'The Pleasure Unit'. Clearly that was some time ago. Overall, the block bears a striking resemblance to an old North London Railway station!

Dist:0.2km north<br/>This is the section north of the intersection with Cheshire Street / Dunbridge Street. The Kray brothers (who famously went on to lead a violent criminal gang in the 1960s) were raised in this area but the house itself no longer exists.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>The picture is of St John’s Bethnal Green and the Underground Station. The lad on the steps of the station and his mates begged to be immortalised on the website once they were convinced I was not taking pictures for MI5!

Dist:0.3km north<br/>The church was severely damaged by a Luftwaffe attack in September 1940, and it was not until 1961 that it could be re-consecrated and re-opened for worship. The interior presents a clean, bright and welcoming space.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Once a public bathing facility, an essential amenity when many dwellings had no internal bathroom. Now it is home to an amateur boxing club http://www.reptonboxingclub.com/ , another important amenity in an area with higher than average youth unemployment and social exclusion.
