It is situated on a waterworks track/footpath that contours the hillside between Sholver and Grains Road above Shaw.

Dist:0.5km<br/>A view over northern-Greater Manchester, from one of its rural Pennine outskirts on Buckstones Road, close to Shaw and Crompton's fringe with Saddleworth, in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. On clear days, it is possible to see Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire East from this upland vantage point beside the Black Lad Inn. In this shot are Shaw and Crompton (in the fore-to-mid-ground), Oldham, Middleton, Manchester Salford, parts of Warrington, and even (on the horizon) Fiddlers Ferry power station in Halton.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Built in 1966 ,on what had been farm pastureland, the County Borough of Oldham made a start on its huge Sholver housing estates. On elevated wind swept land, some 1,000 ft. high above sea level and open to all the elements, the local authority began its scheme to provide nearly 1,700 housing units. Today only about half that amount remain due to redevelopment at Bottom Sholver lower down the hillside.
