Dist:0.4km<br/>It's a real shame how this once lovely picturesque station is now fenced off with seemingly no access to the public anymore. Once one of the furthest out-posts of the London Underground network closed along with North Weald in September 1994. There was a Sunday steam service for a time, but that's also seemed to die a slow death......... see also [[1210170]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>Special trains were running between Epping and Ongar to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Loughton - Ongar railway. This is the road approach to Ongar station from the A128. There was a big turn-out on a very pleasant day.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The sole passenger alights at Ongar from a train from Epping on London Transport's Central Line. Ongar station was opened in 1865 by the Great Eastern Railway. It was taken over by London Transport in 1949 but continued to be served by a shuttle service of steam trains from Epping(hired from British Railways Eastern Region) until 1957 when the line was electrified, much expense having to be incurred on the provision of bridges where before level crossings had sufficed. The line still only had a shuttle service, and patronage was so poor that latterly only a few rush-hour trains ran on Mondays to Fridays with no weekend service. Complete closure followed in 1994, and now the line is in the possession of a preservation society, which, of course, means that it will never again become part of London's transport system.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Part of the former line from Epping to Ongar was brought back into operation by the Epping & Ongar Railway in 2004 and a Sunday service now operates between Ongar and Coopersale. Ongar was served by Central Line tube trains between 1957-94. After the line from Stratford to Epping had been incorporated into the Central Line and electrified in its entirety by 1949, it seemed sensible in due course to electrify the rest of the line to Ongar rather than be left with an outpost of steam working at the far end of the system. But even with electrification passenger numbers beyond Epping were insufficient for the line's viability and it was closed by London Underground in 1994.

Dist:0.4km<br/>View eastwards to the buffer-stops; terminus of the ex-Great Eastern branch from London Liverpool Street via Stratford and Epping. Latterly, the branch had been operate only with a push-&-pull service from Epping. Since 24/9/49 it had come under the auspices of London Underground and shortly after this photograph was taken the branch from Epping was finally electrified and operated by Tube trains. The locomotive in the scene is ex-GE F5 2-4-2T No. 67200.
