The River Aire above Haddlesey winds about like a demented snake, but eventually arrives at this lock in the peaceful village of Beal.

The River Aire drops a foot or two at a weir east of Beal Bridge, so this lock on the south bank keeps the river navigable. The slightly widened stretch of river below the weir is used as a water skiing venue.

This photograph is taken from the Bridge over the River Aire at Beale, looking east. Eggborough Power Station can be seen on the horizon. The river is not navigable to the left of the island in the picture. There is a weir. To the right of the island is navigable via a lock.
