This now leads to a car scrapyard. The line belonged to the GNR (later the LNER) and ran to Batley more-or-less parallel with the Manchester to Leeds line (LMSR).

This is near to the southern terminus of the line, where there was a weighing machine and coal could be taken away by road, or by rail from the adjoining Batley Carr station. This is the only place where the track has survived. The railway is above the brick retaining wall. Note how the upper part of the wall is supported by a long series of arches, which extend for 150m up to Jack Lane. This would seem a more expensive method than building a solid wall, but there must have been a good reason for it - it certainly looks more attractive.

The landscaped area on the left was once occupied by Alfred Place, which had 60 back-to-back houses with two small blocks of privies. On the right, the terrace houses that are set back, after the first two pairs, were built after 1907 on what were allotment gardens.

The original name, carved in stone, is 'Gospel Temperance Hall'. It was built after 1907, and has the ventilation turret that all assembly buildings of the late 19C and early 20C seem to have.

This is the last remaining part of a large block of mills between Bradford Road and Halifax Road. The other part was redeveloped as a supermarket. This early 20C building became South's furniture store before being converted to apartments. The Ordnance Survey has the name as Spinkwell (1850 and 1907), a nearby road is Spinkwell Road, the blue plaque next to the former doorway has Spinkwell; however someone asked for it to be changed to "Sprinkwell". I have changed it back again in view of the above evidence.

Victorian architecture is now being appreciated again. Here the ground floor has been faced with shaped ashlar blocks, and central bays are accentuated by different types of window head: carved animal heads on the ground floor, entablature on the first floor and keystones on the second floor.

The blue plaque reads ”Mark Oldroyd & Sons / Spinkwell Mill / A carding and Scribbling mill existed at Spinkwell from the early 1800s. Oldroyds became one of the World's largest cloth manufacturers with mills in Dewsbury, Leeds, Germany and Silesia. Sir mark Oldroyd (1843-1916) was Dewsbury's mayor 1887-8 and Liberal MP 1888-1901. The company closed in 1959.” The date on the keystone is 1910.
