Dist:0.4km<br/>Road names are part of our history. In Fosse Lane we have a reminder of the Roman influence from 2000 years ago which affects our lives to this day. Coalpit Lane was the way to a nearby coal mine making use of the North Somerset coalfield.

The English Heritage listing states that alternate windows of the long row on the second floor were originally blocked, although it would seem reasonable to suppose that this poor was intended as a workshop, perhaps with hand looms, to give the poor an occupation. The pair of 18C houses to the left are also listed buildings.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Bathford Bridge was built in 1665 and has three arches. Until the last century there was also a ford crossing between where the photo was taken and the bridge. The brook here quite high is known as the Box Brook or the By Brook or the Weavern.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The Post Office squeezed between the George & Dragon and the Fat Friar. Its Batheaston for the good life. Not sure of the category in the end settled for "Post Office" as it is in the middle.

The George and Dragon on the left looks to have been two houses, and the Post Office and fish and fish and chip shop each occupy what were probably houses originally. The White Lion is three windows wide, and was perhaps built before or after the others.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This is a five-way junction. The narrow lane runs steeply up the ridge onto Banner Down, and the road forking to the right takes a slightly longer and easier route, so was probably made later. The old A4 runs out of the view to the right.

Dist:0.5km<br/>So new as to be not yet on the map, this recently opened pedestrian bridge crosses the By Brook at Bathford, just upstream of its confluence with the river Avon, to the left (west) of the adjacent road bridge. The arch bridge in the background carries the main Bristol to London main line railway. The roundabout at the eastern end of the infamous Batheaston bypass can be seen underneath it.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Probably quite wet, just right for rugby. The By Brook runs along the far side of the ground and joins the River Avon on the other side of the road.
