The sign by the chevron is a sign-of-the-times; It is from Nottinghamshire Police and reads "POLICE OPERATION IN PROGRESS PLEASE EXCUSE ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MIGHT CAUSE" In the village there was one car and one van, both empty and no sign of any officers.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Barton in the Beans according to Arthur Mee. In 1646 King Charles I passed through the village on his way to Stamford to give himself up to the Scots. He would have crossed the river at Barton ferry in order to avoid Nottingham.

I wondered at the origin of the name, possibly a corruption of London, or maybe a variation of the word Lonnen for a lane, although this is not normally associated with the East Midlands. Older OS maps do in fact show the area as Little London.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Standard traditional Notts CC octagonal concrete with finial. Barton Ferry has not run since the 1960s but the name lingers on. It looks like whoever sawed off the point on the Nottingham finger did not look at the other side [[1995838]].
