Dist:0.3km<br/>The church path is bordered by large trees. Many churches have a lych gate built over the main entrance to the enclosed area round the church. The name, also spelt lich or lytch, is from the Anglo Saxon 'lich' meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and unconsecrated ground, where the bearers sheltered with the coffin, waiting for the clergyman to lead the procession before the burial. The original lych gates had seats, a lych cross and a lych stone - a slab on which the coffin rested.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This area is the heart of the 'true'* Lancashire Cheese industry, and the rather unprepossessing sheds in this photo are the home of one of the premiere brands - Sandhams. * I think that Lancashire Cheese is not protected geographically, in that it can be made anywhere. However, it tastes best when made in the few square miles north and east of Preston, of course.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This sign dates from the mid-fourteenth century. It links with the Christmas custom of serving a boar's head with an apple or lemon in its mouth at a feast. The custom is still observed yearly at Queen's College, Oxford, where a sixteenth-century carol is also sung as the boar's head is brought into the College dining-room. The boar's head also has an association with Barton Old Hall.

Dist:0.4km<br/>At Barton. The pub is owned by Mitchells of Lancaster who used to brew their own beer. Sadly Mitchells beer has gone for ever. The company now specialises in owning pubs. Ironically they did buy a small brewery from York of all places and sell its beer in their outlets. Adding insult to injury for the Lancashire drinker!
