Dist:0.3km<br/>This engine house is the only remnant of the buildings of the Great Work Mine on the Godolphin Estate. The engine house, built 1829, was named after the Duke of Leeds, who lived nearby at Godolphin House. The shaft, in the foreground covered by metal gratings, is 1000 feet deep.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Once one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, employing over 3000 people in the late 16th century. It eventually cesased working in the mid 20th century. This is the Leeds Shaft, the main shaft for the mine, named after the Duke of Leeds into whose ownership the mine transferred from the Godolphin family in 1785. Both the chimney and the engine house are grade II listed - see http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1142269 and http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1328328. Both date from around 1829, with the engine house being built to house a 60-inch cylinder steam-pumping engine made by Harvey's of Hayle.
