Dist:0.4km<br/>For another view, see [[2132860]]. This pond is located not far to the north-east of [[2130091]], and is one of three in the park; the other is [[2132924]]. Stobhill and Belmont Ponds are located within an area that has been designated a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, and which is managed to encourage the presence of wildlife. As explained at the first link in the preceding paragraph, they were created some time after the boating pond.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The pond measures about 150 by 45 metres (this photograph shows about three-quarters of its length, which corresponds to the part that is located within this grid square). For a wintry view of the eastern end of the pond, see [[2206821]]. This is just one of three large ponds located within the boundaries of Springburn Park; the others are [[2132848]], which is located about 170 metres to the north-east of the photographer's position, and [[2132924]], which is roughly the same distance to the north-west. As for the Boating Pond, an OS map from c.1895 (about three years after the park's creation &#8211; see [[2129723]]) calls it the "Model Yacht Pond", which accounts for its present name. At that time, the other two ponds had not yet been created, but all three are shown on OS maps from 1912 onwards.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The hospital was designed by the architects Thomson & Sandilands and opened in 1904. Stobhill was built by the Parish of Glasgow to meet the increasing need for hospital accommodation for the city's sick poor. For many years it carried the stigma of being a hospital for paupers, and the birth certificates of babies born there only recorded the address and not the name of the hospital.

Dist:0.5km<br/>As described in "Stobhill Hospital &#8211; The First Seventy Years" (O.M.Watt, 1971), 47 acres from Stobhill Estate had, by the end of 1899, been purchased for £6000 as a site for the new hospital. A competition was held in order to select the architects. However, although Thomson and Sandilands did not win, their design was used. The contractors gave the estimate of £163,341 for the building work, which proceeded rapidly; the foundation stone (at the base of the clock tower) was laid in September of 1901, and the work was completed by 1903, although there were to be later additions to the site.
