Dist:0.1km north<br/>A ring road half encircling Nottingham was conceived in the 1870s, fifteen years before the advent of the motor car. The roads: Gregory, Radford, Lenton and Castle Boulevards were styled on the tree lined boulevards of Paris completed ten years earlier and led to the rapid development of the west of the city. The building on the far corner of this junction with Hartley Road is The Boulevard, formerly the Boulevard Hotel and dates from 1883. In spite of a facelift in 1988 the building now looks a little sad. On the right the wall and fencing are all that remains of the works of John Player, the cigarette manufacturer, a major employer in the area. The site is now occupied by a supermarket and retail units. The round faced building on the right beyond the junction is the Boulevard Works which is proposed for conversion into student accommodation.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>This view gives a good sense of the character of the Radford area of Nottingham: the main roads are heavily tree-lined, making for an attractive picture in high summer, and there are many substantial and interesting Victorian and Edwardian buildings, like the converted mill on the right of the photo. On the other hand, the Boulevard pub on the opposite corner of the crossroads is boarded up, as is the shop on the end of the terrace at the left of the photo by the traffic lights.
