Dist:0.4km<br/>View westward, towards Newcastle: ex-NER 'Coast' main line: Newcastle - Sunderland - West Hartlepool - Stockton and the South. The train is headed by a Gresley B16/2 rebuild (1/40) of a Raven B16/1 No.846 built 3/20, renumbered in 1946 No. 1406, then 61475 in 1949 by BR, withdrawn 4/63. The station was badly damaged by enemy action in 1943 and was already re-roofed in 1953, rebuilt in 1965.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This is the former Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manxman which was photographed from inside the yard of Pallion Engineering (with permission). Although there are plans for her preservation, she is not in good condition.

Dist:0.5km<br/>In this area Sunderland's last two shipyards worked until 1988. To the right of the picture, across the river, is the covered shipbuilding hall of the Pallion shipyard of Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilders. Now used for assembling cranes (I think). Moored next to it is an old passenger ferry that was originally going to be converted to a nightclub before the owner ran out of money. In the shipyard's heyday much larger ships were tied up here being outfitted. To the left in the picture is Queen Alexandra bridge, a steel girder bridge being repainted at the time of the photo (hence the different colours). The land at the extreme left, and where the photo was taken, was the Austin and Pickersgill Shipyard until its closure in 1988 and subsequent demolition.
