Dist:0.1km<br/>Named after the highwaywoman who supposedly used to frequent the common robbing people. It's now a "gastropub" - I used to go in here with the kids, pre-goats cheese and balsalmic vinegar for chicken and chips. Odd that this Pub is not shown on the OS map.

Dist:0.2km<br/>One of the very few remaining expanses of heathland in Hertfordshire, with a very delicate habitat created by light soils and a long history of grazing. Once the grazing stopped trees and scrub grew, and shaded out the heathland plants, so there has to be active management now to control the spread of the vegetation cover before these heathland plants are smothered. On the south side of the Common the ground was ploughed up during the Second World War and although now re-seeded with grass, it has a completely different open image to the north side shown here. Oh, yes, and a highwaywoman, unmasked after her death as Lady Ferrers of Markyate, reputedly haunted the Common, and is commemorated by the name of the road through the Common and the name of the local hostelry.

Dist:1.0km northwest<br/>The Elephant and Castle pub seen in the background has a lovely garden and fine open fires in the winter. It also has a well in the bar, with a clear cover which you can gaze down whilst having a pint. Following the lane to the right will take you a short distance to the village of Wheathampstead, my birthplace, and that of Apsley Cherry Garard who went with Capt Scott to the South Pole.
