Dist:0.3km<br/>On the map this wet field is part of Ashurst Hospital grounds (and not part of the New Forest Crown land) but an open gateway with no gate in it means that the ponies are free to wander in and graze. The trees of the Churchplace Inclosure are in the background.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Ashurst hospital was once the New Forest Poor Law Institution and is recorded to have had 13 officers and 110 inmates in 1921. It was built for the destitute and needy children and was also renown as a refuge for local tramps who were given a bed for the night. During WWII it was a military hospital and housed many wounded from Dunkirk and later from the blitz on nearby Southampton and casualties were also brought in from Portsmouth. It is now "The Ashurst Centre" as part of the NHS and houses a rehabilitation unit amongst others. The brick building on the left is a chapel. Dist:0.4km<br/>This wet grassy strip of open forest is between the railway line and the Churchplace Inclosure - there are often ponies grazing here, which gives railway passengers heading for Bournemouth their first view of the New Forest.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The station was originally known as "Lyndhurst Road" station, the most convenient stop for Lyndhurst on the London-Weymouth line. The first station on the site was built in 1847 to accommodate the gentry that stayed in Lyndhurst or at other country houses in the Forest. The name "Ashurst" was only coined in the early 20th century in relation to the growing settlement along the A35 road. The (New Forest) tag distinguishes it from Ashurst in Kent.
