Plaque on bridge reads: This Plaque is in honour of the local men of Tameside who served in the Crimean War. The bridge was built in the first year of the War and was named after the first major battle, the Battle of Alma, fought by the British and French against an unsuccessful Russian Army. Alma Bridge also served as a Toll Bar and monies were collected until 26th June 1902.

The re-built Ashton Canal Warehouse is home to the Portland Basin Museum, Ashton under Lyne. Portland Basin is at the junction of the Ashton and Peak Forest Canals.
