Looks big to me, but this John Deere 6400 is on the small side by modern standards. The front loader was manufactured nearby in Ludlow, an increasingly rare instance of a surviving factory making stuff.

Still no street lights, a rarity in a village of this size. The villagers are very good at keeping them out.

A reminder of the days when villages like this had an economy. Has not been a cider house for a long time. The main landowner in the early twentieth century was strongly temperance, and tenants were forbidden to make cider, let alone sell it. Ashford Carbonel was surrounded by cider and perry orchards, some still remain.

A terraced cottage that briefly held the village post office and small shop in one of the downstairs rooms. Closed in 1970.

I wonder what would happen if we resurrected the practice of driving sheep and cattle - very hungry cattle through the village? A labour intensive job which involved sending folk ahead of the herd to block off all the garden entrances. Most of the land we used for grazing has been built on.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Cul de sac village and notorious as one of the Ludlow area's most desirable addresses. A three room cottage here will set you back £250000, and that's the smallest property in the village. A sleepy dull place, the pubs were all shut down by a previous landowner, even cidermaking was banned. To this day the place is dry, removing an obvious social focus. Good news is that there is still a school here, due to the closures in neighbouring villages. However the expansion in housing that the village needed was denied by South Shropshire Council's planning policy - roughly translated as "plebs in towns please". Note re spelling. Both Carbonel and Carbonell are acceptable, and both used by the OS. The quirk used to be a source of a little local pride, along with the fish window in the church and the mill.

Dist:0.1km<br/>A redundant dairy farm which once supplied the village with milk from a famous Ayrshire herd. In the 1960s this was one of 4 dairy farms in the village. It is planned to develop the area covered by the buildings, so far new building on this farm has been attractive and of a high standard.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Gate to Ashford Court with a recently built bungalow beyond. The village is not gritted, which makes life pleasingly difficult for all the Porsche owners.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Two houses which still look more or less the same as they were 40 years ago. I particularly like the porch.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The park was split up on the sale of the Ashford Court Estate in 1951. The foreground was farmed from Court Farm until 2007 but since the early 1980's the background part has been grazed by horses from the Court. Sadly the great oaks have largely gone now, but there is still a fine line along the driveway of the court.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Small field above the green - traditionally the site where villagers took their compulsory archery practice. The oak is quite striking. The transformer dates to 1967 when the electricity supply was modernised.
