Dist:0.7km south<br/>The age and uniformity of the trees is the giveaway that these are relatively recent plantings. The area was an industrial wasteland of coal bings until the late 1970s when the then Lothian Region brought in earth-moving equipment to re-landscape it for leisure purposes. These trees occupy the site of the Emily Pit bing. The Emily, named after a daughter of the Dundas family on whose land it was situated, was reputedly the deepest coal-mine in Scotland. http://walking.visitscotland.com/walks/centralscotland/gore-glen-park

Dist:0.7km south<br/>These irridescent beetles [Chrysomela aenea] were very common on Alder leaves, the colours depending on the angle of view, from red, green, blue, to gold. They are in the chrysomelid family, which has about 2500 species in Britain, and includes the Colorado potato beetle. C. aenea is a widespread, but mainly northern and western, species. Thanks to Dr K. Bland for identification.
