Dist:0.3km<br/>This lane was photographed from the point where it branches off from [[2411751]]; this is also the location of the signpost that marks the start of the right of way. The lane leads a short distance downhill, and then through a railway underpass, emerging at the shore. For another view of the same area, but looking back uphill from the other side of the gate, see: [[442432]]. As for the right of way to Levengrove, much of the path, which is located in a grassy fringe above the shore, is often extremely overgrown with bramble stems and similar vegetation; depending on the tide, it may be easier either to walk along the shore itself, or to follow the edges of the fields that lie on the other side of the path.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Cardross lies about 1.5 kilometres ahead, along this road. The photograph was taken from near the start of a public footpath that leads to Levengrove Park, mostly along the shore: [[1024504]] Some of the houses of Ardoch are hidden behind the trees on the right. The place-name occurs as Ardach in a 1512 charter of James IV [#3777, dated 3 November 1512, in RMS(*) volume 2]. The same charter also mentions "Cragend" (Craigend: see [[431874]]), and "le Leis", probably the Lies: Netherlie, Overlie (or Over Lie of Ardoch), and Whiteleys ([[NS3876]]) – see Murray, "Old Cardross" (1880); the name is represented by the "Lee" that is shown at [[NS36657617]] on the first-edition OS map, and nearby "Lebank" (now Leabank"), and by the name of the present-day Lea Farm. Dist:0.5km<br/>"It is common on nutrient-enriched, well-lit calcareous materials, but may also be found on acid rocks on the coast. The centre of the thallus and the long lobes have pale, blue-flecked soralia" [George Baron, in "Understanding Lichens"]. The thallus is the main body of the lichen, and the term "soralia" is explained below. This specimen was growing on a boulder on the upper part of the beach. The soralia are the darker small round structures scattered over most of the lichen's surface, except for its edges; they allow the lichen to reproduce asexually. They are masses of soredia, which are loose powdery granules containing a few fungal and algal cells (i.e. both of the components that make up the lichen). When dispersed, soredia can develop into new lichens. For images of other Physcia species, see the links at the end of [[1050283]].

Dist:0.5km<br/>[Impatiens glandulifera. Stace's flora (2ed) calls it Indian Balsam, but it is perhaps more commonly known as Himalayan Balsam. It has a variety of colloquial names.] The patch shown here lay not much further along the path shown in [[2546558]]. See also [[2546571]], where other patches are evident. This non-native species is an attractive plant, and popular with bees, but it spreads rapidly, and is widely viewed as a nuisance (see http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=23863269 for more information). The field in the background is yellow from an abundance of common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea).
