Arbourthorne Estate Homepage


Rollestone Wood is the largest of the seven woodlands in the Gleadless Valley. This lies only 2 miles south-east of Sheffield city centre and was until its development as a residential district in the 1950s and 60s, a rural area of hedge-lined fields and woodland.

Looking between the flats, this is the (sort of) picturesque view across the Gleadless Valley from the Rollestone estate. The white and green tower blocks in the distance are another pair of Sheffield landmarks which were a trio up until a few years ago, situated at Herdings.

Dist:0.5km<br/>When I was a kid, we used to make Cap-Bombs from 2 bolts and a nut joined in the middle, packed with Caps and throw them from the top floor onto the bridge, much to the amusement of the residents (Not), and also throw Scotch Arrows over the flats onto the grass behind.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The short single-track Herdings Park branch of the Sheffield Supertram system remains its quietest section. The area has suffered from some depopulation, so services on the branch, which was opened in April 1995, are not as frequent as on the rest of the system. [[1458121]].
