The historic town of Appleby, set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley, is one of the loveliest towns in the North of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby has been inhabited for over 1,000 years.

The Sands area of the town grew rapidly after arrival of the Eden Valley Railway in 1862 and the Settle-Carlisle line in 1876.

Even in this reasonably sized market town the police station is now hardly ever manned. A telephone outside suggests you ring 999 then presumably wait for a car to attend from Penrith. There is another photo here [[275556]]

A Grade II listed 18C coaching inn with an arched entrance to the yard. Beyond the inn the road climbs up Battlebarrow.
