The old village shop in Alvingham (note the new brickwork over the front door and window indicating the position of the awning). This shop was managed by the Trafford family who have lived in Alvingham since the middle of the 19th century. Next door is the Wesleyan Methodist chapel with the Great War memorial plaque (the middle of the two structures on the gable end). In the distance the crossroads, where a left turn will bring you to the 2 Anglican churches.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Peering out from under the trees that surround the churchyard all that remains of the former Gilbertine Priory can just be made out as a series of humps and gullies in the grass field. The churchyard is reached by a footpath through a working farmyard, and care is needed, but there is a clearly marked parking area nearby.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The church was formerly the chapel of a small Gilbertine Priory which adjoined the parish church of St Adelwold at Alvingham. The Priory was founded as a 'double house' for both monks and nuns in about 1150 and by the Dissolution of the Monasteries when the house was surrendered to the Crown on 29 September 1538 it had a prior and seven canons and a prioress and eleven nuns. It was subsequently given to the village of North Cockerington when their church became derelict. The simple two cell monastic chapel was extended over time and the current tower dates from a C19th restoration. The church is now redundant and looked after by the Historic Churches Trust.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Two churches sit in the one churchyard, St Adelwold’s Alvingham and St Mary’s, North Cockerington. St Adelwold’s church, consecrated in 1131, had a thatched roof until 1820. No other church in England is dedicated to the Saxon Saint Adelwold who was Bishop of Lindisfarne.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The nearer church is St Adelwold, which was the original parish church for the people of Alvingham. This is the only known dedication to this saint, who was a saxon Bishop of Lindisfarne. The church dates from the early C10th but most of the surviving fabric is later, being C13th [including the tower] and C14th or newer, including a C19th restoration. The second church is St Mary's, which until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII was the chapel of a small Gilbertine Priory founded in about 1150. It then became the parish church for North Cockerington, a village about a mile away across the river Lud, whose own church had become derelict. The tower is C19th, and the church was much restored at time. The interior has box pews and some old tomb fragments are on display.The church is now in the care of the Historic Churches Trust and the key is available nearby on request. The churches can also be found in a profile similar to this on the village signpost.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The building is still there, but I'm not sure if either of these businesses still exist on Yarburgh road, Alvingham. A kind person, looking in on Geograph, sent me a letter on 6th March 2009, saying that these buildings have now been replaced by two houses.
