Dist:0.4km<br/>Taken in 2002 from Western Road showing the top part of Hill Street. The low-rise property on the centre left is the former Hillbank Nursery. With the passage of time many other properties near this roundabout have either been demolished or modernised but save for the Johnnie Walker building, on the left skyline, this particular view has remained relatively unchanged for the last 50 years.

Dist:0.8km<br/>A bridge takes the B7064 over the trackbeds of two railways. The nearer line is still open and was the Glasgow and Kilmarnock Joint Railway running to Glasgow via Stewarton. This was operated by the Caledonian Railway The further arch crosses the now closed Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway a rival line operated by the Glasgow and South Western via Dalry. The Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway track is still there in places, buried under vegetation. A 1976 map shows it as intact as far as Dalry. The line is now a cycle path, National Cycle Network route 73.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The famous whisky brand is owned by Diageo who are proposing to close the bottling plant in Kilmarnock and throw 700 out of work. The effect that this would have on the town is pretty obvious. There is a massive campaign to save the plant, and a distillery in Port Dundas, but the suits remain unmoved. They will be OK. "Keep Johnnie Walker in Kilmarnock" is on all the official welcome roadsigns on the roads into the town.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Celebrating the conversion of a length of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway into a cycle path. The railway was still shown on maps in 1976, and closed to passenger traffic along with the Kilbarchan Loop in 1966.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Loop formed recently to allow engines on goods trains to change ends. This loop has been built on the route of the Kilmarnock to Crosshouse rail line which was closed and has been turned into a cycle route. The path continues in the distance from the access ramp on the left of picture.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Seen across Western Road, are the abandoned engineering offices for Post Office Telephones (now British Telecom (BT)). These offices were still in use during the late 1980's / early 1990's until centralisation meant they were no longer required. There was a previous use for the BT building that being of company offices for Southook Potteries. This was part of Shanks (later known as Armitage Shanks). The take over of Shanks resulted in the closure of all premises in Kilmarnock and the building was taken over by Post Office Telephones.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Public house on Hill Street, by the doomed Johnnie Walker bottling plant. Owned by the Brown family since being built and sold on their retirement the premises remained as a Public House until recently. The premises were built as a replacement to a previous Public House, sited further North, of the same name to allow construction of the flats shown on the right of the image. Although the building is still standing its use has ironically changed and is now a mosque.
