Dist:0.6km north<br/>This row of beech trees must have been deliberately planted so close together in a row, along some kind of boundary maybe? There are more further to the left, but they are not so close together. In the distance is Fawley Down and the clump of trees around Hydes Cottages.

Dist:0.7km west<br/>View north from the Pilgrims Trail footpath across Hazeley Down. This huge field has crops in the centre and a jump circuit around the edge (I don't know the technical equestrian terms for these things).

Dist:0.7km south<br/>Morestead is a hamlet. The junction with Hazeley Road is just visible at the bottom of the valley, a place which is frequently flooded. This road is well-used by commuters as it connects the hinterland southeast of Winchester with the M3.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>A right of way passes NW from this point up to Morestead Road along the edge of the MoD "danger area" south of Chilcomb Ranges. The sign warns you to keep to the waymarked path and not to touch any unusual objects (unexploded ordnance). The missing beech tree next to the sign is not a casualty of military training.

Dist:0.9km southeast<br/>This sign applies to a footpath that runs NW from Fawley Lane, through Morestead Down, and meets up with the Roman road (Morestead Road) at SU505265. The "danger zone" is an area of downland to the south of Chilcomb Ranges.

Dist:0.9km west<br/>Looking SSE. This is same track as Jim Champion's photo except looking the other way. In the wooded valley is a crossroads between two rights of way. Turn right for Twyford, left for Morestead Road, straight on to Hazeley Down.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>This 12th century church is at the foot of the downs, on a steep slope above the tiny village of Chilcomb.

Dist:1.0km east<br/>Fawley Lane rises from the crossroads at Morestead, up the chalk spur known as Fawley Down and along the ridge to the high point at Cheesefoot Head. The track is a bridleway, and also provides access to the agricultural land on Fawley Down. The hedge to the left bears frequent signs warning against entering the Military Firing Range "danger area".

Dist:1.0km west<br/>Looking northwest along the Pilgrim's Trail where it climbs Twyford Down on the way to Winchester. This bridleway forms part of a long-distance route (St Michael’s Way) between Winchester and Mont St Michel in Normandy.
