<br/>Holborn is on both the Central and Piccadilly Lines, and the Piccadilly Line station was opened in 1906. In 1933 the station was substantially modernized including the opening of the Central Line station, which replaced the British Museum station about 250 metres away to the west. This is the west entrance to the station in Kingsway. There is a north entrance in High Holborn round to the left. The former Kingsway tram subway passes under and along the road here. The bus is on a 243 service bound for Waterloo Station.

<br/>This extraordinary sight was photographed on the corner of Kingsway and High Holborn: a man pushing a trolley laden with assorted plastic bags - contents unknown - along the pavement, the weight of it being such as to make it hard to manoeuvre. Passers-by looked on, even lent a helping hand, but no-one spoke...the magnitude of the operation was awe-inspiring and yet heart-breaking too.

<br/>The building on the corner of Macklin Street and Newton Street is Wimbledon House, its architecture in contrast to the modern office blocks further along Newton Street. Macklin Street, now an unremarkable back street connecting Holborn and Covent Garden, once known as Lewknors Lane and later Charles Street, was notorious in the 18th and 19th centuries for its houses of ill-repute. It was renamed Macklin Street in 1878, after an 18th century Shakesperian actor, and became gentrified.

<br/>Taken at the junction with Macklin Street. This area, sandwiched between Covent Garden and Holborn is one of the parts of central London that has a 'village' atmosphere, with a range of local shops, a pub and a primary school.
