Lunctime Music with Crossland
Venue: Church of St John the Baptist, Greenhill
Location: Harrow on the Hill
Neil Crossland studied at the Royal College of music, and after graduating as a major prizewinner in both piano and composition was featured in The Times in their Great British Hopes series. As well as concerts all over Europe he has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John's, Smith Square, the Barbican and has made six appearances at the Purcell Room. In 2003 Neil gave a series of recitals at St James's, Piccadilly where he performed all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas which have since been recorded on the innovative Deltatel record label.
Neil has given numerous broadcasts on BBC Radio, he has performed many of his own works live, and he has twice been invited as a guest on Radio 3's In Tune programme. He has also recorded music by the distinguished astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, and appeared on the BBC's The Sky at Night programme looking at the links between music and astronomy. Just before the programme Neil had the unusual task of transcribing the opening theme for solo piano.
At the Southwark Festival Neil performed Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with the British Chamber Orchestra directed by Owain Arwel Hughes and most recently played Mozart's Piano Concerto in A, K488 with the Blackpool Symphony Orchestra. Amongst his recordings, Neil's first two CDs of Liszt and Rachmaninov were chosen by The London Evening Standard as selections of the week.
In recent years Neil has increasingly turned his attention to composition. His ballet Catharsis Op 34 is dedicated to Prince Ernst of Hanover and in 2003 he completed all seven of Schubert's unfinished piano sonatas and recorded them on three CDs. In memory of his late father, who sadly died in 2005, he composed his Yorkshire Suite Op 41 which he premiered at the Wigmore Hall in 2006. Since then he has completed a Requiem, a large scale work for orchestra, chorus and four soloists. It is hoped that it will be given it's premier performance in 2008. In spite of his busy performing schedule, Neil continues to find time to compose and is also a highly respected teacher of music and piano.
Lunch time concerts are held at 12.30pm on alternate Thursdays from September to the beginning of July (details are included below). There will be a retiring collection to help cover the expenses. Snacks are available from 11.45am. Read more »
